Rules

Respect.
Drama is better kept IC. Respect is key between members; if you want respect you must give respect. If there's a problem with a member please contact either one of the mods or one of the admins.

Site Rating
TAOE is an intermediate to advanced, mature rated site [M], so we ask that all members to be just that; mature. There can be some pretty heavy subject matter so be warned. No characters below 18 years old. NPCs like children and such can be mentioned. There will be no child molester characters allowed on this site.

Word Count
Though there's no word count, we ask that you try and match your partner's number of words. It's no fun when you write a nice big paragraph and you get a couple sentences back, right? Then don't do it.

Number of Characters
There's no limit to the amount of characters you can make, however before you can make a second character, we ask that your first character has 10 IC posts. Same goes for any subsequent character. PLEASE KEEP YOUR CHARACTERS ACTIVE IF YOU WANNA KEEP THEM.

Registration
Register your character as "First Last" on the site, with your character names. If you messed up somehow talk to an admin, they'll be more then glad to edit your name for you. OOC accounts are reserved for Admins and Moderators, so please do not make them!

Avatars
Avatar pics are 250px by 300px. The personal image on the minioprofile is a square and will resize automatically. This can be an image that represents the player, much like the avatars on the cbox! The Gif is 230px by 110px. Since the skin was so nicely coded by YunoTheNine, we ask to have high quality images please, keep the site pretty. Here is a link to help crop images and gifs: EZGif | PicMonkey

Faceclaims
We ask that all faceclaims/play bys to be of actors of age (17 and older). We also ask them to be of real people (actors, models, etc, someone you can get pics and gifs), no anime or other cartoon characters. If you want to use art of your character you can put that in your signature, if you wish.

God-Modding
There will be none tolerated. There are rules to character powers and such for that reason, please see those sections in order to make sure you're not making your character too strong. If you have any questions contact an admin or mod and they'll be more then happy to help!

Templates
We simply ask (please) that you use the basic template which is provided within the posts, super easy, either click on the button that says "template" when you write your post or write [template][/*template] at the beginning and end of a post (minus the star). Plotters are required to have a template, but there's lots of resource sites for that such as Caution to the Wind

Classification
Generally speaking, the only classification changes characters can undergo is from Pure to Imperfect. Characters can POTENTIALLY go back to Elisium pretending to be Pures, but that would be a very elaborate plot that needs to be discussed with either By or Jonah before it happens.

Copyright
Everything on this site is copyrighted to the said members or individuals here on TAOE. Skin was made by YunoTheNine of Shine. Templates and Graphics belong to the rightful owners, and there will be no stealing characters either. So we will put it frank, you steal ANYTHING without giving the proper credit, you will be banned. No warning.

MOST IMPORTANTLY
We're all here to have a good time! So kick back, write loads, and have fun~! Make some friends! Like, for instance, Steve Buscemi, who also happens to be the password that you need to send to an admin via PM in order to get accepted. ;)

Plot

GENERAL

TAOE is set in the biggest city, Haven, of the Isle of Man, an island reserved for those the government deems 'imperfect'. Sexual orientation, gender expression, mental and physical health, intelligence, your willingness to cooperate... It all leads up to your ultimate downfall, the one that brings you to the doors of Haven. The weather is harsh, the streets are filthy, and most of the inhabitants live in poverty, fighting for sport and profit, and joining gangs to get by. It's a tough life, that in Haven, but hey; someone has to be a scapegoat.

But little does the government know, there's something about the Isle of Man that changes its inhabitants. They call it the Flux, and it's quite the phenomenon, leaving people who were once only usual in spirit or body, now unusual in ability. It's like a power, one that can come suddenly, or over time, or even not at all. It all depends, person to person, and is, for whatever reason, all based around the citizen's personality. Whether you're Pure or Imperfect, you have a chance of being blessed, or cursed.

Yet, through this rejection and hardship this is where home lies, and this is your chance to make it so.

HISTORY

The Authority is in place to protect us. They serve us to the best of their ability, they protect the citizens of this country until their very last dying breath. Long ago was a time where there was no peace. War raged upon the land, death and destruction ravaged the people, destroyed their homes, split them apart into chaos. In their desperation for control over the anarchy and disarray, the Authority stepped into their ranks, unannounced, unwelcome at first. This did not last.
They lured the people into their grasp with the promise of peace and prosperity, a vow to food, the end of crime and violence. Of course, the good, the bad and the ugly wanted in on this pledge, and many started taking advantage of the system. Like leeches they sucked, squeezed what they could of the government, to the point where there was general alarm, the populace began to notice! And thus began the weeding.
At first it was but criminals, the worst of the worst, all raided and plucked from the public eye, sent away to an undisclosed location for the safety of the country. But their haul through time grew in size; illness causes panic, those who are sick must be put somewhere else, disability, lest it be mental or physical, leads to voids in the community, gender should be a norm of two, no more no less, and those who do not confirm are to be re-educated or removed... the list for their demands grew longer and more elaborate.

Soon, correctional and holding facilities for these so dubbed Imperfects were so overcrowded you might as well akin them to cans of sardines. The Authority realized they needed a different strategy to keep these people from their Pure society.

They found an island, abandoned from times past, a city crumbling from within. The Isle of Man, reclaiming the city as their own they called it Haven in order to mask the true atrocity behind their Elisium.

This was sixty years ago. We are now the year 2021, three generations into Haven's rebirth.

Every morning wake up, wake everyone up, breakfast, make lunch, prepare for patients.
Every evening clean up and do not look back on how things went, do not regret a single second of it, do not so much as hesitate. You have done your best, now go back home where you can have dinner with your family, love your daughter to the ends of this earth, where you do not need to worry of life or death, of what people will think of you if you make a mistake. Then, at the end of the evening when everyone parts ways to sleep, you can enjoy some time with your husband, and then you can rest your weary head.

This was repeated every day and night, where little had changed in the last few years. Like a mantra it is rehearsed day in and day out, and that is just how the cookie crumbles.

Fjord loves what she does. As a doctor she is able to help those in need of medical aid, she does the best she can and people heal from their maladies... what she didn't like were those whom it was too late. She had a few patients where all she could do is try to relieve their pain on their way to a more peaceful time; death. Today seemed to be the day where they all came to see her in their deepest suffering, so she could ease them somewhere more comfortable.

Now it was evening, and she was preparing a meal for them all, quite happy to be home after these long hours.
This hadn't always been home; as doctors on Elisium they had what was considered to be the best of the best, a small house in the countryside, near a sheer cliff that lead to the ocean, with a constant salty breeze washing over them, lush greens behind their little seaside home... it was beautiful.
Was. Now they lived within the shackles of Haven, and it was nowhere near as nice as it used to be.
Not that it mattered. Fjord simply considered herself lucky that she was here with her loving husband and daughter.

Now, what was on the menu tonight? A patient of hers had given her some gulleagle meat, so she was preparing it in a white sauce, that she would be spreading over pasta. It would be most likely tasty in comparison to the mainly vegetable meal they had been having these last few days, and Fjord was certainly not opposed to a little more fat in her family's diet.

If anything, however, it was that she was tired. It had been a long, long day, and she could not help but worry for her loved ones, and how they had done today. She had been far too busy working to converse with her husband at all today, and she wondered if he was still at the office, toiling.

It had been the week from hell when it came to patients. The gang violence had apparently escalated, causing both sides to show up in need of help. And Fabian, being who he was, wasn’t about to let anyone down. So he had worked over time in order to make sure everyone was taken care of properly, with what supplies he could muster up. The only good thing about the gangs was that by helping them, he could almost guarantee that him and his family would be safe. And by safe, it meant that he didn’t have to really worry about his daughter or wife getting injured out on the streets. It wasn’t one hundred percent, but it at least relieved a bit of stress from him. And he was willing to do whatever it took to protect his family, even if it meant helping out the not so decent side of Haven.

Fabian washed up in the small bathroom that they had at their offices, having finally managed to strip out of his bloodied scrubs and put on a pair of decent denim jeans. He scrubbed down his arms and his face and slipped on a basic grey t-shirt. The one thing he did miss was all of his amazing suits. He had a few left, that had been kept in pristine condition, but he only wore those on very, very special occasions. And even then, he more often wore the well used ones. He smiled at the thought though, looking at his reflection in the mirror. He didn’t have to hide anymore, and nor did his family. He shouldn’t be complaining.

After finally putting himself back together, he finished locking up his things before making the trek back to the East Side and toward the house that they had fixed up for themselves. It wasn’t huge or luxurious, but it was home, and it made him happy. It was only a twenty minute walk and one that he would cut in half by jogging. Fabian could not wait to get home to his wonderful wife and eat quite the meal. He let his long legs carry him through the streets, even at fifty, he looked like he didn’t have a care in the world. As he reached the house, he slowed to a brisk walk, catching his breath as he moved his way up to the front porch. As stealthy as he could, he slipped through the door and into the kitchen quietly, sneaking up behind Fjord and wrapping his arms around her waist. He buried his face in the crook of her neck and let out a soft sigh. ”Good evening, love.” He had that classic crooked grin on his on his lips.

It happened all too often that Fjord was so deep in though she did not so much as realize what was happening around her. This time was no different, focused on her cutting knife quite intently, so as to not slice a piece of her fingers into tonight's dinner. Just because she was surgeon and when it came to scalpels she was highly astute, a kitchen knife was far from a tool she had used within the operating room. That meant she was highly careful with it, every chop slow and precise, much like she would be using an oversized scalpel.
Honestly she would hate having to use a kitchen knife for anything outside of chopping onions, they were so dull in comparison to the tools she was used to having a hand upon.

It made her wonder how good a scalpel would be for cutting carrots as she was now.

Her thoughts, however, were quickly interrupted by what felt like a pair of hands slipping around her waist, arms wrapping around her in a tight embrace. At first shw was more then just a little shocked; her whole body jumped in place, and she lifted the knife from her fingers so she could not, again, slice them into bits.
"Good evening, love." came the words of the one she had married years ago, and once the initial fear was gone she scolded him, playfully. A light bop on his arm as a warning, perhaps even a small gasp as she gave a musical laughter. "Fabian! I could have included my fingers in our meal if I had not been careful!" she exclaimed to him, but it was clear in her voice that she was not actually not angry at him.
No. Instead she put her knife down a few moments and with her clean hand she softly raked her fingers across his scalp, parting five waves of hairs as though Noah commanding the Great Sea. "You are as terrible as ever." she sighed in mocked exasparation, leaning her head back onto his own for a moment of quiet respite.

Fabian would know well how difficult it was to gain this woman's affection, prude as she was, fearful perhaps of the judgement she would have gotten succumbing to his sweet nothings. And how he was still sweet, Fjord recognized just how good of a husband she truly had, in all his gentlemanly ways.

Even if he frightened the pants off her legs sometimes. "I suspect you had a long day yourself then, if you are home so late?" she asked him once she finished hugging him with her head, turning this one enough to catch the edges of his eyes, and smiling all she could for her perfect husband.

That crooked grin on his lips only grew at her jump and her playfully scolding. There were some things that just never got old, and the occasional startling of the two women in his life were one of those things. It was always in good fun though, and in moments like now, he knew that Fjord was quick enough to realize what was going on and not chop her own finger off to add to the mix. ”I would have stitched you back up.” He winked playfully at her, grinning crookedly all the same. He rather enjoyed the sound of her voice, that musical laughter of hers. It flowed through his ears as smooth as honey, soft like silk, comforting in every sense of the word. He looked forward to hearing it every time he walked through that front door. Not to mention, he didn’t mind seeing the lips that those words came from either.

As she ran her fingers back through his hair, Fabian let out a soft sigh, letting his eyelids close in contentment. If he wasn’t so hungry, he would have said to hell with dinner and would have taken her upstairs for some much needed alone time. But at the most perfect moment, his stomach let out a low grumble as to add it’s two cents into the convo. There was a low chuckle from him and he nodded his head, ”And yet you still put up with me. I couldn’t be more grateful.” As she leaned her own head against his, he gave her another soft squeeze around her middle.

He had remembered quite vividly just how difficult it was to get her to even pay attention to him in the beginning. The courting had been extensive and well thought out, and it had paid off in the end. In fact, he remembered the day that she finally gave in and allowed him to take her out for dinner after exams. What a beautiful evening that had been as well. He wouldn’t have changed it for the world. Hell, he would still bend over backwards for her, no matter the circumstances or consequences.

He was pulled back to reality as she began speaking again, turning her head just enough to look at him. He grinned, the corner of his eye wrinkling up and showing a bit of his age. ”There was a bit of a brawl that went down just after you left. Nothing that a few stitches and a couple of splints couldn’t fix.” There was a low chuckle as he moved to let her go and lean up against the counter next to her, crossing his arms over his chest comfortably.

I would have stitched you back up.

Oh please Fabian. Now that, that statement right there made her roll her eyes at him, and possibly even shake her head. Dear me dear me, you wouldn't have done so so nonchalantly, or perhaps you would to reassure me as well as yourself, and anyone that should come through that door. She certainly wasn't willing to share that with anyone else her delectable salad finger, that would be simply atrocious! "Of course you would have." she teased him lightly.

He was the one and only man she'd allowed to get to know her beyond a friend or a coworker sort of relationship. She had come to appreciate him as an individual; his intelligence, how he respected her in her needs beyond what Elisium asked of a woman, and she could not thank that enough. Their relationship had taken months and months to groom to the point of where she finally said yes to a dinner date after semester exams were over, and needless to say she'd felt foolish for declining him all that time. The dinner had been very good and the date was better then she could have ever imagined. It changed everything between them, how she viewed him, how she behaved around him as well, and from that day on she'd considered him more then just a friend. He was her partner at the time, as boyfriend was such a nasty word she did not enjoy saying.

He was her partner, and now husband, loyal, loving, caring, and simply perfect for her. "Of course I do, my dear. You and I have come this far, we've been together long enough that I know when best to listen to you and when to ignore you." she TEASED maybe with a little playful mean attitude. Oh but she didn't mean it in a horrid way, she really was just playing, she just... knew how to toss her words in order to provide some sick burns.
What a lovely man he was, however.

When he told her what kept him so late from home, she could not help but sigh a little, watching him lean up on the counter besides her. "Again? That is the second time this week patients have come in battered and bruised due to fighting. Are the... what are they called, The Pits back up and running? Tch. What fools." though this time her harsh words were actually what she meant exactly. They were stupid for doing what they were doing, what was the point of all that fighting anyways? It wouldn't be the first time they've treated people who were pinned up in the pits, and she'd heard many horror stories about fights to the death.

How barbaric. Desperation must be high for people to pay for that sort of entertainment.

Fabian couldn’t help but grin crookedly and snicker in her direction. That eye roll of hers got him every time. Even after all that they have been through, he was still madly in love with her. He couldn’t imagine his life with anyone else, nor did he ever want to. It was why he had dropped everything to follow her and Serena to the island. Not to mention, she put up with him and understood the hectic life of a surgeon. He also wanted to throw in that she was a total piece of arm candy, that he absolutely enjoyed knowing was his. She was much more intelligent than him, caring and loving as well. She was everything that he could ever ask for and more. He felt complete with her in his life, it was as simple as that. He continued to grin as he looked her over with those mismatched eyes of his. There was a bit more of a chuckle from him as he took in her response. Such a witty and honest statement it was. He attempted to give her a look that screamed he was appalled by her statement, but he completely failed, the corners of his lips twitching and his eyes twinkling the slightest amount. ”How could you say such a terrible thing?” He let out a low chuckle before the conversation took a turn toward the more serious side of things.

He nodded his head in a slow manner, lifting an arm to run his fingers back through his thick, dark hair. He absolutely hated when the pits were up and running… and he honestly felt like things ran a bit more smoothly when they were closed. But sadly, it did appear that they were open and running once again. He couldn’t help but shrug his shoulders at her comment. What fools was correct. ”They are definitely fools, but who else are they supposed to turn to? It isn’t like the authority hospital is going to welcome them with open arms. We may disagree with what they do, but we help them anyway. I know some of them are doing whatever it takes to care of their families, and I respect them for that.”

"Strange, it was not very difficult at all." she admitted to him as she resumed her chopping job; if they were going to be able to eat today it meant that she needed to continue. It was nice that Fabian would be joining their meal, a nice change of pace for once instead of having him arrive earlier then he usually would have. Generally speaking when he got home the meal was a cold one, and there wasn't much for him to warm it up in aside from the stove, though half the time he was far too hungry (or lazy, she didn't know) to warm it up himself.

In any case he was here tonight, and that's all that mattered to her right now. She knew his heart was in the right place, and perhaps more then even hers. She was the type of doctor who would treat their patients but then once they awoke she'd give them a healthy earful of what they were doing wrong. For those fighters in the Pits she would simply tell them that they had it all wrong, that they should be doing something else with their lives but risking them so severely every time they fought.
She knew all too well that some of those combats were to the death.

"There are always other options Fabian." she sighed to him, closing her eyes for a second before she peered down at her chopped carrots. Good, those would be excellent in the sauce, as well as some celery, and the pasta, which she'd prepared earlier. Picking up the sticks of green now she began to chop those too, and she sighed lightly through her nose. "I do not wish to think about that any longer. It is discouraging enough without bringing work home, can we talk about something else my dear?" she asked him, casting her tired eyes over her shoulder to his form, tilting her pretty head as she asked.

The conversation made her think of that young man with his oh so small son, small enough that perhaps he didn't quite understand the implications of what death really meant. She hoped he would never find out.

If there was one thing he appreciated most about their relationship, it was the fact that even in the darkest times, they could still joke with each other. It was actually quite beautiful. He rubbed at his eyes and smirked at her, watching her go back to chopping up some veggies for dinner. He hadn’t had a warm meal all week, and it was mainly because by the time he got home it had grown cold and he was too hungry to wait and heat it up. He could be a fairly patient individual, but when it came to having not eaten all day, he honestly just wanted to put some food in his stomach. Not to mention the fact that Fjord made such wonderful food that he couldn’t wait to eat it. She could be a master chef if she really wanted to be, even with what little ingredients they could get their hands on.

He let out another soft chuckle and nodded his head at her next statement. There it was again, her being absolutely right. There were always other options when it came to making a living, but some people would do anything for a quick buck. And every so often someone comes along that is actually really good at making that buck. Fabian had a lot of respect for those people. Personally, he could never fight for a living, but he also had a trade and studied medicine which allowed him to make a living else where. In all reality, he had to consider himself lucky. No, his profession was not easy in the slightest, but he was able to help people and he very, very thankful for that. He stretched his arms above his head, almost grazing the ceiling with his long fingers before letting his arms fall back down and crossing them over his chest lightly.

So she wanted to talk about something that didn’t pertain to work. He smirked a bit to himself but nodded his head. That was a tough one considering the fact that their lives revolved around their clinic or them being home. There wasn’t much else they did outside of that. He let out a low chuckle though, remembering something that might put a smile on Fjord’s face. ”It’s still a bit about work, but a young girl came in with her mother this morning for some antibiotics and she had on a shirt that Serena had made. I must admit, I was rather proud and so was she. Poor girl was coughing up a storm but smiling all the same. She actually reminded me of a young Rena. I wish you could have seen her.” There, how was that lightening the mood. He grinned and inhaled slowly, ”Mmmm… it’s nice being home on time for dinner.”

Fabian and herself had the perfect profession that no matter where they landed in their lives they would always be able to work. People always needed a hand medically, lest it be with simple routine things or even more complicated surgeries and such. The only exception to their lucky rule was being that they were located somewhere where there were no other people. In that case they could always try to live off the land, which wasn't anything that anyone in Elisium was familiar with. Crops and agriculture were all taken care of via artificial intelligence, and so there was no need for any sort of manual labour. It was quite the spectacle, but it sure didn't make for any useful humans when it came down to living in Haven. Good thing some books still existed amongst the grapevines, in some places. They were hard to find, but if it wasn't for that Fjord was sure that a lot more people would have failed.

That, all in all, was a nice work story, and something she could get behind. It wasn't any of these terminally depressive ones which would literally put her to bed they were so crushing. It was a nice to know that Serena's clothes making was getting around. She was happy the young woman was keeping busy through the misery that Haven was, and keeping away from that one young man who she knew was into her. She'd known Rafael for quite some time now, and she wasn't too sure she wanted Serena hanging out with him anymore then they were. He was quite unstable and she knew there were many a problems with him, none of which Serena needed to make her life anymore complicated then it already was. Not that he was a bad influence, oh no, but she did not want him to get too closely attached to him either. He was high risk, and thus she wouldn't be surprised if he just popped one day.

"I am happy to hear that she was wearing one of Serena's articles. I am certain she wore it well; our daughter has a way of making clothes look good on a person. Tailor made, it is quite impressive." she admitted with a quiet nod and finally finished cutting all the vegetables, coming in to start searing everything together. "We should make it a point to have a family dinner, twice a week. Or at least try to. Though with our schedules that may be impossible."

Fabian had always been one to help others. If it meant that he had to work in a rundown house on the edge of the isle, then so be it. It was better than being told he couldn’t help anyone at all. If neither him nor Fjord had stepped in to help the city of Haven, the death count would be astronomical. The local hospital that was run by the Authority and the resident doctors cost nearly an arm and a leg which meant the people of Haven avoided it at all costs. Which was exactly why Fjord and he ran their clinic under the radar. If the Authority knew what they were up, they would both be dead, along with quite a few of the patients they have saved. The thing was, though, he wouldn’t trade it for the world. The only things he truly missed about Elisium was the updated medical equipment and having the perfect sterilized surgical suites. However, those were fairly low on his list of priorities, hence why he was currently standing next to his beautiful wife in a house that was pretty run down, wearing the most basic of t-shirts with ripped jeans and the biggest crooked grin that he could muster. He didn’t care if he had to work with run down equipment, he was happy with his family and helping people. He didn’t need anything else.

When it came to Serena’s friends, Fabian just let her do her thing. This was because he never made time for a social life with the exception of Fjord. He was also quite ignorant to just who she was hanging out with. He had complete faith in the fact that they had raised her to have a good head on her shoulders. And he wasn’t wrong, she was a good person. But she was a very trusting person, which put her in questionable situations. In her head, everyone had a good side, they just didn’t know it. And that was instilled in her brain at a very young age, thanks to one forgiving and optimistic father figure. With that being said, Fabian hadn’t the slightest idea about just how bad Rafael could potentially get. And since they still maintained a level of doctor/patient confidentiality, they rarely used names unless they were working on them together. ”She obviously gets her talents from you. There is no way I could throw something together like the two of you do and make it look good. Or taste good, considering you’re making supper. If it wasn’t for you two, I would be living in potato sack clothing and eating garbage, I’m sure.” He winked at her playfully, smirking more so to himself than at her.

As Fjord brought up having dinner twice a week together, he offered her a classic crooked grin before reaching in to snag a sliced vegetable before it had hit the pan. ”I don’t see why we couldn’t make it work. Of course, emergencies are going to happen, but we could work around those. We would have to clue Serena in, where ever it is that she has ended up this evening.” He let out a soft chuckle as he attempted to reach into snag another vegetable without getting caught.

Oh Serena, how I worry about you from time to time, especially with your choice of friends. It wasn't that the young woman was a bad person, au contraire! She was perhaps even too good for her own good, too easily trusting of the other individuals around her whom may not have the same sort of good intentions she was to have. Fjord herself was far more of a realist then her husband was, no mstter the day, and she couldn't lie to herself in the fact that her daughter would get herself a rude wakeup call at some point. As much as she did not wish for it to happen she knew it would, and she herself would even to brace for impact.
"Yes,she is quite brilliant." the woman added, and chuckled slightly at his comment about her being talented as she was. "My dear, she has two surgeons as her adoptive parents, one might think she would learn from either one of us through immitation. I suppose we are lucky in that fact, after all." she told him and chuckled some to herself.

With all the vegetables now sufficiently tosses around in the ceramic pan, Fjord lowered the fire and was sure to add in the stewed tomatoes, one by one, breaking them apart with her wooden spoon only to release the delicious juices into the sauce, wondering now where she had put that can of tuna they had. Today sounded like a good day to have themselves some tuna pasta, having been something she had wanted to eat herself for quite a while now.
"I do not think you give yourself enough credit my dear." the woman informed her husband, smiling as she set the cover on the pan so as to let it all simmer, finally turning herself around and facing the man she could call her own. It wasn't exactly good to be so possesive another human being, but this was her husband. What more could she say and do about him? She loved the man dearly, he was a good part in her life, a strong constant, and there was no nees to bring him down.

She was certain that had he a need to take care of himself he would certainly do it, she did not fear that in the slighest. "I do believe it would be nice. I suppose I can mention it to her should I see her, but I am not certain when that will be. If all goes well tonight she should join us for dinner."
